"abstract": "Surface charge is considered a key factor influencing cell-material interactions and may affect the endothelialization of cardiovascular implant materials. In this study, the zeta potentials of aliphatic polyesters, polyurethanes, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) were determined before and after exposure to serum. While the investigated materials exhibited strongly different negative zeta potential values prior to serum treatment, these differences largely diminished following serum incubation, indicating a pronounced masking effect due to adsorption of serum-derived biomolecules. Endothelialization was assessed by fluorescence microscopic analysis of the endothelial cell cytoskeleton, revealing no clear relationship between the initial surface charge and cell adhesion or spreading behavior. Overall, the results suggest that native zeta potential has no or only a minor influence on endothelialization under biologically relevant conditions. Therefore, zeta potential alone is not sufficient to predict the endothelialization potential of implant materials, emphasizing the importance of considering protein conditioning effects and additional surface characteristics.",
