"abstract": "Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is frequently related to significant blood loss and allogeneic transfusion, which carries risks of infection, immunomodulation, and increased morbidity. Intraoperative autologous blood transfusion is a potential blood-conservation strategy. Aim: To estimate feasibility, safety and effectiveness of intraoperative autologous blood transfusion as an approach for blood conservation in cases having elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Patients and methods: This prospective cohort research has been done at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, Menoufia University Hospitals, Egypt, included 52 adult cases admitted for elective isolated CABG surgery, patients have been allocated into two equal groups: Group A (Autologous Blood Group). Group B (Control Group) Results: Baseline characteristics were largely comparable. Hematocrit on the second postoperative day was significantly greater in the autologous group (30.8 ± 3.3% vs 28.6 ± 3.1%, p=0.009). Early chest-tube drainage (first 12 hours) was significantly lower (327 ± 139 vs 427 ± 119 mL, p=0.008). Postoperative transfusion rates (50% vs 61.5%) and complications showed no significant differences. Conclusion: Intraoperative autologous blood transfusion is a feasible and safe technique that reduces early postoperative bleeding and improves hematocrit recovery by the second postoperative day, although it did not significantly decrease allogeneic transfusion rates in this cohort.",
