"abstract": "Background : A better understanding of plasticity localization phenomena in metals requires both sufficiently large fields of view, including a sufficiently high number of grains, and a fine resolution to better understand the nature of this localization, its onset and transmission. Objective : The aim is to measure strain over a large area, with high resolution, while limiting the number of images to be taken during the tensile test. Methods : (i) Deposition of gold nanoparticles with a new Pulsed Laser-induced Dewetting (PLiD) method. (ii) New algorithm measures strain by relative displacement of neighbouring particles. (iii) Refinement at certain points of interest by measuring deformation at drop scale. Results : The strain field was measured over an area of 40 × 60 µm 2 with deformation steps of 4%. The resolution obtained was 50 nm, with an accuracy of 0.008% on deformation and 0.5 nm on particle displacement. Local measurements were used to fine-tune the resolution of a slip band down to pixel size (2.44 nm). Conclusion : New prospects are opening up for measuring strain over large fields of view at high SEM resolution, while limiting the number of images taken during the tensile test. It is also shown that by making judicious assumptions about the strain field, it is possible to extract information locally with very high resolution down to pixel size (here 2.44 nm).",
