"abstract": "Neuronal circuits in the dorsal striatum support the selection of actions among multiple potential options. This process relies on the integration of diverse sensory information and on local computations involving projection neurons (SPN) and inhibitory interneurons, which strongly regulate striatal output. Among these interneurons, parvalbumin-expressing (PV) and somatostatin-expressing (SOM) cells display markedly distinct anatomofunctional properties, suggesting that they are differently integrated into striatal circuits and mediate distinct forms of inhibition onto SPN. However, it remains unclear whether these differences extend to the organization of their cortical inputs, and how these inputs relate to those received by SPN. Here, we investigated the spatial organization of projections from the primary and secondary somatosensory areas (S1 and S2), onto striatal PV and SOM interneurons and their relationship with those onto SPN. With a combination of anatomical tracing and functional circuit mapping, we characterized key features of corticostriatal connectivity patterns. We found that input spatial dispersion and input strength, at both the individual cell and population levels, were the principal features distinguishing PV and SOM interneurons. Moreover, our findings suggest that the mode of interaction between interneurons and SPN connectivity may be determined both by the interneuron type and the cortical source. On one hand, PV interneurons receive S1 inputs structured in large clusters that densely overlap with those of neighboring SPN, while their S2 inputs are more diffuse. On the other hand, SOM interneurons receive abundant cortical inputs, but thinly disseminated across S1 and S2 and that barely overlap with those of SPN. These cell-type and area-specific wiring patterns indicate different modes of cortical recruitment of striatal inhibitory circuits, potentially supporting two complementary forms of striatal information processing.",
