"abstract": "Background\n\nConventional burn dressings maintain a moist wound environment and reduce infection but do not directly counteract the sustained oxidative stress and inflammation of the burn wound bed. Cerium dioxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles possess redox-based antioxidant activity, motivating their incorporation into a resorbable dressing. This study aimed to fabricate and preliminarily evaluate CeO₂-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanofiber dressings for burn wound healing.Methods\n\nCeO₂-loaded and pristine PLGA nanofibers were produced by electrospinning and characterized for fiber morphology, elemental composition, tensile properties, wettability, water uptake, and in vitro cytocompatibility. Wound healing was assessed in a full-thickness rat burn model over 28 days, with histological analysis at days 7 and 28.Results\n\nCeO₂-incorporated nanofibers showed a smaller average fiber diameter (159.8 ± 97.6 nm) than pristine PLGA nanofibers (267.9 ± 146.3 nm). CeO₂ incorporation reduced tensile strength, although all fibers retained good elongation (> 50%) before fracture. In vivo, the CeO₂-loaded nanofibers produced a transient reduction in wound area that was significantly greater than the control at days 14 and 21 and greater than pristine PLGA at day 14 (p < 0.05); by day 28, wound areas had converged and the differences among groups were no longer statistically significant. Histological analysis showed earlier collagen deposition and no adverse tissue response.Conclusion\n\nCeO₂-loaded PLGA nanofiber dressings are biocompatible and can accelerate the intermediate phase of burn wound closure in a rat model. Because the CeO₂ redox state, CeO₂ release, and in vivo antioxidant mechanisms were not directly measured, the improvement cannot yet be causally attributed to CeO₂, and further mechanistic studies are required.",
