"abstract": "Quality control (QC) of red blood cell (RBC) components is essential to ensure transfusion safety. Evaluation of hematological and biochemical parameters helps assess the adequacy of processing and modification techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of leukocyte-reduced, leukocyte-depleted, and irradiated RBC units. Objectives included: (i) assessing hemoglobin content and hematocrit; (ii) quantifying residual leukocyte content; (iii) measuring percentage hemolysis and extracellular potassium content in irradiated RBCs; (iv) evaluating sterility; and (v) comparing results with national and international QC standards. A retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care blood center from July 2024 to June 2025. Whole blood was processed using TACE II + automated extractors into leukocyte-reduced and leukocyte-depleted RBCs. Irradiation was performed using a linear accelerator. QC testing of 206 RBC units included hemoglobin content, hematocrit, residual leukocyte content, percentage hemolysis, extracellular potassium content, and sterility. Among 13,673 donations, 13,534 were processed into 5401 leukocyte-reduced and 8133 leukocyte-depleted RBCs. QC testing showed leukocyte-reduced RBCs with hematocrit 57.6% ± 4.7%, hemoglobin content 48.9 ± 4.6 gm, and residual leukocyte content 3.3 ± 2.1 × 108. Leukocyte-depleted units had hematocrit 59.7% ± 5.8%, hemoglobin content 49.0 ± 5.4 gm, and residual leukocyte content 2.3 ± 1.9 × 106. Irradiated units showed a percentage hemolysis of 0.93% ± 0.24% and a potassium content of 24.0 ± 6.2 mmol/L. All units were sterile. Over 90% met QC standards. RBC components prepared with automated extraction consistently complied with national and international QC benchmarks, supporting safe transfusion practice.",
