"abstract": "The demand for hybrid polymer-metal assemblies is growing worldwide, addressing challenges in fields such as biomedical implants. Among assembling techniques, laser welding is gaining attention for its quick processing, minimal pretreatment, high design freedom, and reproducibility. While these assemblies show strong mechanical resistance, understanding the root causes of adhesion—particularly potential chemical bonds at the interface—remains challenging, especially for thick assemblies. Previous work suggests breaking assemblies and dissolving the remaining polymer on the metallic surface to access the interface, an approach effective for cohesive failure modes. Here, we explore assemblies with mixed or adhesive failure modes using this breaking-and-dissolving combination. Results suggest that the methodology for accessing interfaces should be adapted to the assembly's failure mode: breaking and dissolving for cohesive failure, but breaking alone for mixed or adhesive failure. Both approaches were tested on laser-welded thick polyamide-6.6/titanium assemblies exhibiting a mixed failure mode. Interfaces were analyzed using XPS and ToF-SIMS. The methodology successfully provided access to interfacial molecular information, supporting previous findings that show the formation of a C-O-Ti bond at the interface resulting from laser welding.",
