"abstract": "Modulating the gut microbiota using probiotics has been shown to help maintain gut microbiota and support immune function. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of growing-up milk supplemented with a multistrain Bifidobacterium probiotic on gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), immune markers, and diarrhea episodes in healthy children. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 102 healthy children aged 1 to 3 years old received an intervention product containing a multistrain probiotic comprising Bifidobacterium longum BB536, Bifidobacterium breve M-16V, and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis M-63 (6.9 × 10⁷ CFU/serving/strain), and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) or a placebo with GOS but without probiotic strains for 90 days following a 14-day baseline period. Fecal samples were collected on days 15 and 105 for microbiota, SCFA, and immune marker analyses, while diarrhea parameters were assessed using the Bristol Stool Chart and defecation frequency. The probiotic group showed a significant 1.2-log increase (p=0.00069) in total viable Bifidobacterium, although this was not significantly different from the placebo group. Quantitative PCR confirmed significant increases in Bifidobacterium strains between groups (p<0.05), except for B. infantis. Enterobacteriaceae increased significantly in the placebo group (p=0.01) but remained stable in the probiotic group. In the probiotic group, SCFA concentrations and IL-10 (p=0.0098) increased significantly, while IL-8 remained stable, although no differences were observed between groups. A lower prevalence of diarrhea was observed in the probiotic group, although the difference was not statistically significant. Overall, the multistrain Bifidobacterium probiotic demonstrated the ability to colonize the gastrointestinal tract and may support gut microbiota, the gut environment, and immune function.",
