"abstract": "Lanthanum-based perovskite oxides with formula LaBO3 are promising functional materials. Interestingly, their physicochemical properties can be tuned through compositional engineering of the B-site in the structure. While extensive research has focused on tailoring these materials for applications such as catalysis and energy conversion, the influence of the composition on phase formation and chemical stability remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate the synthesis, crystal structure, and acid stability of a series of La-based perovskites containing one, two, three, or five transition metals on the B-site, including Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, and Mn. Pure Fe-containing perovskite takes an orthorhombic structure, whereas all other single-phase perovskites adopt a rhombohedral phase, including the high-entropy La(CrMnFeCoNi)O3 composition. Co-containing samples exhibited larger crystallite sizes than Nicontaining analogues. The chemical stability of the perovskites was investigated by exposing the materials to an acidic solution and monitoring the degradation process using time-resolved X-ray total scattering and pair distribution function analysis. The results reveal that acid stability is primarily governed by the Fe content on the B-site. Compositions containing more than 50% Fe remained resistant to dissolution under the investigated conditions, whereas lower Fe contents led to progressive structural degradation. For compositions that dissolved completely, distinct crystallite sizes resulted in different dissolution behaviours, highlighting the additional role of microstructure in controlling chemical durability. No intermediate crystalline or amorphous phases were detected, indicating a direct dissolution pathway. PDF analysis further revealed the progressive leaching of La and transition metal cations into solution during degradation. These findings establish composition–structure–stability relationships in La-based perovskites and provide design principles for improving the chemical durability of compositionally complex oxide materials under acidic conditions.",
