"abstract": "Born in Annecy, France, on 6 January 1947, Paul Tapponnier was first and foremost an extraordinary field geologist and observer of nature. He possessed a remarkable talent for reading the record of Earth’s crustal deformation directly in landscapes and rocks, and for explaining complex tectonic ideas in simple and compelling terms. He pioneered the use of satellite imagery to map active faults and produced the first comprehensive maps of active fault systems across Asia. He interpreted the geometry of faults and the distribution of seismicity in Asia using slip-line theory, conceptualizing the continent as an elasto-plastic medium deformed by the rigid indentation of India. He further developed models of the India–Asia collision through both analog experiments and, later, numerical modeling. Through extensive collaborations with geologists from China, Nepal, and other Asian countries, his work led to the quantification of Quaternary fault slip rates across Tibet and neighboring regions. Based on a combination of geological observations and experimental modeling, he proposed and demonstrated that the successive extrusion of continental blocks accommodated the convergence between India and Asia and was associated with the opening of marginal basins. He also documented surface ruptures from several recent large earthquakes and discovered evidence of major past earthquakes along faults in the Himalayan foothills. Beyond Asia, Paul Tapponnier made significant contributions to the understanding of rift propagation, earthquake recurrence, and tsunami sources in regions such as Afar, the Mediterranean, the Antilles, Indonesia, and North America. He passed away in Beijing on 24 December 2023. His scientific ideas, methods, and field-based approach will continue to exert a profound influence on our understanding of tectonics",
