"abstract": "The oxalic acid/oxalate family is an instrumental C 2 platform for a circular carbon economy strategy. That molecule is the first and simplest of the C‒C bonded products obtained from CO 2 , and production technologies are already available, assisted by renewable electrons or from biomass. Exploiting this family of compounds as C 2 synthons through reductive C‒C couplings into value-added carbon skeletons is a promising opportunity. However, the chemistry of oxalate reduction remains poorly described with the reactivity of these species under reducing conditions or the associated degradation mechanisms still scarcely investigated. Here, we combine electrochemistry, EPR spectroelectrochemistry and computational chemistry to in-depth study the electrogeneration of radical anions from oxalate esters, bringing new perspective on the degradation mechanisms of these reduced species.",
