"abstract": "Variable-pressure conductivity has attracted growing interest in recent years due to the importance of activation volumes for ion transport in energy storage systems like solid state batteries, solid oxide fuel cells and solid oxide electrolyzers. Most variable-pressure conductivity studies have overlooked the effect of particle size and size distributions even though they impact key determinants of charge transport: particle packing, interatomic distances, and lattice strain. Here, we utilize chromium(1,2,3-triazolate)2 nanoparticles as a model system to elucidate particle size effects on variable pressure conductivity. These materials lack deliberate surface capping ligands that would otherwise complicate analysis. Using impedance spectroscopy, we find significant size dependence in the variable pressure conductivity. A combination of strain analysis, density functional theory calculations, and particle packing simulations suggests the major cause of the size dependence is greater surface reactivity in smaller particles, which leads to a greater degree of particle fusion at lower pressures. These results hold practical importance for pressedpellet conductivity measurements of all powder materials in general.",
