"abstract": "Hydrogen-bonded Organic Frameworks (HOFs) form a rapidly expanding alternative to Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs). Among HOFs, the Molecular Adsorbing Host•Guest ( MAHG ) crystals introduced here combine cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) macrocycles and a tetraacid derivative of diphenyl-viologen (TETRAC). Despite their non-porous crystalline framework, MAHG crystals enable the diffusion of dihydroxybenzenes (DHB), which tend to localize in specific crystalline sites. The diffusion of DHB inside the permeable crystals is followed by striking color changes related to the formation of charge-transfer (CT) complexes between the electron-rich DHB and the electron-poor viologen units confined within the CB[8] cavities. Kinetic and crystallographic studies indicate the possible separation of DHB mixtures. This work highlights the potential of MAHG crystals for the rapid detection of DHB via colorimetric changes and their separation in water, offering a promising approach for industrial applications dedicated to hydroquinone and catechol production.",
