"abstract": "π-Conjugated molecules are essential in a wide range of modern technologies: organic electronics, sensing and biomedical applications. The incorporation of heteroatoms into fused aromatic systems represents a key strategy to modulate their optoelectronic properties. While nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen have been extensively investigated in this context, phosphorus remains far less explored, despite offering a unique combination of properties: tunable oxidation states, rich coordination chemistry, non-planar geometry at heterocyclic rings, and a strong ability to lower the LUMO energy of π-systems. These properties make six-membered phosphorus heterocycles especially attractive building blocks with capabilities that other heteroatoms simply cannot provide. However, the synthetic methodologies available to incorporate these heterocycles into large fused π-conjugated architectures remain underdeveloped, hampering broader exploration of their extraordinary potential. In this review, we aim to offer synthetic and organometallic chemists a starting point to identify current limitations and develop new, more versatile strategies for incorporating these heterocycles into fused architectures, and, in turn, a practical guide for materials scientists seeking to design new π-extended phosphorus systems. In particular, we provide a systematic catalog of the cyclization reactions reported to date for the preparation of six-membered phosphorus heterocycles fused at different positions to aromatic rings, organized around five model structures according to the bond(s) at which fusion takes place, from metal-free strategies to the transition-metal-mediated C-P bond-forming methodologies that have driven much of the recent progress. We anticipate that this overview will encourage new, more efficient synthetic routes to fused phosphorus heterocycles, broadening access to this underexploited class of π-extended systems.",
