"abstract": "Late-stage skeletal editing has emerged as a useful strategy in synthetic and medicinal chemistry for altering molecular frameworks by atom insertion, deletion, replacement, or bond reorganization. Functional organic molecules and materials are commonly optimized through peripheral substitution and de novo framework construction. Direct modification of an existing skeleton provides a complementary means of tuning electronic structure, molecular shape, chirality, packing, and processability. Herein we examine catalytic skeletal editing with an emphasis on functional organic materials, specifically π-conjugated molecules, dyes, polymers, and covalent frameworks. Representative examples are evaluated in terms of catalytic status and experimentally demonstrated properties. Key requirements for broader application include site selectivity, element transfer, catalyst compatibility, and control of editing extent in extended materials. The emerging opportunity is to move skeletal editing from reaction-centered diversification toward catalyst-controlled, property-directed modification.",
