"abstract": "Lithium plating is a key barrier to achieving faster charging of lithium-ion batteries; however, fundamental and nanoscale understanding of plating is still being developed, largely due to the dynamic nature of the process. Here, we perform operando electrochemical atomic force microscopy on individual graphite platelets to observe the morphology evolution of plated lithium and graphite electrodes simultaneously. We observe plating-induced fracture of the graphite platelets even in the absence of a porous electrode structure. Unexpectedly, fracture occurs through preferential lithium deposition beneath the particle surface despite lithium-ion transport limitations, pointing to lithium in graphite as the lithium source. Our findings deepen the understanding of the lithium plating process and offer pathways to improvement for fast-charged negative electrodes.",
