"abstract": "An enduring topic of scientific interest since the beginning of cognitive psychological research is visual attention. This phenomenon describes the process by which certain visual percepts are prioritized for deeper processing in the brain, while others receive reduced processing and thereby exert less influence on perception and behavior. In our daily lives, visual attention is critical to performance across countless situations—from navigating busy traffic to maintaining focus on a friend in a crowded room. Therefore, understanding the neural mechanisms that dictate how we select relevant visual information and filter out distractions is central to understanding one of the brain's most fundamental cognitive abilities. Because these attentional processes unravel rapidly in time and are reflected in dynamic patterns of cortical activity, encephalographic measures (i.e. electro- and magneto- encephalography) have been popular tools for their study. In 2025, attention researchers from across Europe gathered in Amsterdam for two days of meetings, discussion, and debate on current issues and future avenues in the encephalographic investigation of attention. This perspective piece distills the ideas and topics that emerged from that meeting into a field guide to contemporary encephalographic research on visual attention. It provides a snapshot of several active research areas in visual attention, highlights where they are heading, and which questions are likely to shape their future. We hope that this piece will be especially useful for early career researchers looking to enter the field but unsure about what their next research question should be.",
