"abstract": "We tested whether a new pest control method: sprayable adhesive droplets made from oxidized plant oils (MIX), can physically trap thrips on Chrysanthemum leaf surfaces and investigated the effects of spraying plants with MIX on the metabolome of local and systemic leaves in interaction with herbivory of thrips. MIX adhesive did not effectively trap thrips. However, total thrips damage and reproduction were reduced by MIX spraying, especially on leaves in the middle of the shoot (the youngest tissue when sprayed). Regarding metabolomic effects, no interaction between MIX application and thrips herbivory was found. Locally, the levels of several plant-stress related compounds differed between the leaves of MIX-sprayed- and control plants. No systemic effect of spraying was observed in newly grown leaves. Thrips infestation and plant tissue age were themselves also associated with differences in the contents of several metabolites that are linked to herbivore resistance.",
