"abstract": "Quinone-based electrochemical CO2 capture in aprotic organic solvents relies on the redox-controlled formation of quinone–CO2 adducts. Understanding how these bound species respond to light is essential for identifying competing reaction pathways that may alter carrier stability and the chemical outcome of capture. Here, we investigate the photochemical behavior of electrochemically reduced 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PAQ) in DMSO under CO2 and N2 using visible-light irradiation (440 nm). Electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements reveal light-responsive behavior of the reduced-PAQ/CO2 system. CO evolution is observed during irradiation under CO2, with earlier quantifiable detection and greater accumulation than under N2. Water addition strongly suppresses CO evolution, suggesting that water-induced changes in reduced-PAQ speciation affect the CO-forming pathway. Together, these observations suggest that reduced-PAQ speciation influences CO formation, with light-induced transformation of PAQ–CO2-bound species as a plausible contributing pathway. These findings highlight photochemical stability and waterdependent speciation as important considerations in the design of quinone-based CO2-capture systems.",
