"abstract": "Exceeding the 1.5 °C target set by the Paris Agreement for warming is becoming increasingly likely, with consequences for mountain glaciers remaining uncertain. Using global climate and glacier models, Schuster et al. [1] show that a temporary overshoot of the 1.5 °C threshold could have irreversible consequences for mountain glaciers. In basins where glaciers reform after peak temperature, runoff is reduced more than under a stabilisation scenario, leading to through water and increased water stress. In general, around half of all mountain glaciers show reduced runoff under temperature overshoot, over periods ranging from a few decades to several centuries.",
