"abstract": "While students are taught at a fairly early age that CO₂ emissions are responsible for climate change, few teaching approaches enable them to rigorously understand why. Our aim in this article is to propose a framework for reconstructing this knowledge through reasoning grounded in experiments, for students in Cycle 4. This approach consists of an introduction to infrared radiation and the relationship between a system’s radiation balance and its temperature, with the goal of introducing the Earth system’s radiation balance, focusing solely on its interface with space. Observing infrared images of balloons filled with air and CO₂ then highlights the interactions between this gas and infrared radiation. Understanding this phenomenon ultimately allows students to extrapolate the consequences of adding CO₂ to the atmosphere on the Earth’s radiation balance.",
