"abstract": "Aims\n\nClimate change and other anthropogenic environmental changes may alter fungal distributions and ecological interactions, potentially facilitating the emergence or redistribution of opportunistic fungi in marine ecosystems. These shifts raise concerns regarding microbial contamination in seafood and the need for surveillance in marine organisms. Elasmobranchs, such as sharks and rays, are ecologically and economically important but remain understudied regarding fungal occurrence in wild populations. This study provides the first report of cultivable fungal taxa associated with the Brazilian sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon lalandii) from southeastern Brazil. Methods and results\n\nSwabs from the mouth, gills, and cloaca were obtained from 22 specimens procured from artisanal fisheries in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fungal occurrence varied among sampled anatomical sites and individuals, with several cloacal samples showing abundant growth under the culture conditions employed. Recovered isolates consisted primarily of members of the Candida parapsilosis species complex and Meyerozyma guilliermondii, alongside occasional detection of other yeast taxa including Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Debaryomyces hansenii, Trichosporon japonicum, and Pichia terricola. Because fungal recovery relied on culture-based methods, ITS sequencing of representative colonies, and sampling restricted to external and cloacal tissues, the detected assemblage likely reflects predominant culturable taxa rather than total fungal diversity. Furthermore, implications for food safety, transmission pathways, or environmental contamination remain speculative and warrant targeted investigation.Conclusions\n\nThese findings expand current knowledge regarding fungi associated with R. lalandii and highlight the need for additional studies incorporating environmental sampling, edible tissue analyses, and broader fungal characterization approaches to better understand potential ecological and public health implications.",
