"abstract": "Background: Patient-centered care (PCC) is one of the dimensions of healthcare quality recommended by the Institute of Medicine. In Egypt, physicians’ perception of PCC and its relationship with job satisfaction is undermeasured. Objective(s): This study aims to assess the attitude towards patient-centered care among physicians working in three public hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt, and its relationship with their job satisfaction. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among physicians working in three public hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt using an online self-administered questionnaire to collect data about their sociodemographic and some work-related factors, their attitude towards patient-centered care using the Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS) and job satisfaction using the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. Results: Among 303 physicians, most physicians (90.4%) had a low PPOS score (4.57 or less). The mean ± SD physicians’ PPOS score was 3.83 ± 0.56, the mean ± SD sharing subscale score was 3.54 ± 0.77, and the mean ± SD caring subscale score was 4.13 ± 0.57 (possible range of scores is 1-6). Physicians’ specialty (t=2.234, p=0.026) and number of working hours per day (F=2.969, p=0.032) were significantly associated with the PPOS score. Multiple linear regression analysis model showed that physicians working 5 hours or less per day or 6-8 hours reported significantly higher odds (0.360 and 0.293) of PPOS compared to those working >12 hours (confidence interval: 0.097-0.489 and 0.096-0.518). The mean ± SD job satisfaction score of the group was 2.74 ± 0.44, and 67.7% had a moderate level of job satisfaction. Among the personal characteristics, only the number of working hours per day had a significant statistical association with job satisfaction score (F=2.969, p=0.032). No statistical association was found between PPOS and job satisfaction scores. Conclusion: The study physicians present a more doctor-centered than patient-centered attitude towards patient care and both physicians’ specialties and the number of working hours were significantly associated with PPOS score, but only the number of working hours (8 hours or less) predicted higher patient-centered care. Most physicians were moderately satisfied with their jobs, with a significant association only between the number of working hours and job satisfaction.",
