"abstract": "Gastrointestinal (GI) motility plays a fundamental role in digestion, metabolism, immunity, and drug absorption. Yet, many current diagnostic and therapeutic devices designed for the GI tract overlook its dynamic mechanics, compromising their effectiveness and reliability. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of GI motility metrics, current devices and their limitations, and how a deeper understanding of motility can improve device design. We also highlight sex-specific differences in GI motility and their implications for clinical translation. We offer a perspective for a new approach that embeds standardized motility metrics into device development, thus improving diagnostic accuracy and personalizing therapies. By emphasizing physiology-guided design principles, future ingestible devices could adapt in real time to individual motility patterns, thereby transforming patient care.",
