"abstract": "Polymorphism plays a significant role in crystal engineering, as it can directly influence the physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Aspirin (ASA) is one of the extensively studied model compounds in small-molecule polymorphism due to its pharmaceutical relevance. To date, ASA has been reported to exist in four polymorphic forms, Forms I, II, III, and IV. Like polymorphism, preferred (or preferential) orientation is another important characteristic in solidform screening that increases the risk of misidentifying pharmaceutical compounds as polymorphs. Here, we report evaporative crystallization of Form I ASA, with and without a metallic mesh template, in solvents of different polarities, exhibiting preferred orientation driven by the resulting crystal morphology 2 while retaining Form I. It was observed that the solvent and/or template independently/combinedly, along with grinding, has induced the preferred orientation of Form I ASA modulated by crystal habit during some crystallization conditions. Consequently, this study may provide a rationale for preventing the misidentification of crystal polymorphs during pharmaceutical manufacturing and development.",
