"abstract": "The electrical double layer (EDL) defines the few nanometer region between an electrified surface and its interfacing electrolyte. This non-Faradaic interfacial phenomenon has often been overlooked in the battery field in preference to the Faradaic charge-transfer and interphasial forming reactions. Here, a perspective is provided to focus on the EDL and how it dictates much of the later reactions’ behaviors. Two fields of understanding are discussed-one being computational and how to accurately model the EDL in more complex electrolytes, the other being experimental and how to accurately probe the EDL. Both fields are of importance to designing electrolytes and electrodes for improved battery performance, all ofwhich is dictated through interfacial behavior. K E YWORD S",
