Abstract

The lifetime ratio rτ≡τΩb-/τΞb- between the Ωb- and Ξb- baryons is measured using a sample of pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1 and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2 (2015−2018). The ratio rτ is measured in two sets of decays modes, (Ωb-,Ξb-)→(Ωc0π-,Ξc0π-) and (Ωb-,Ξb-)→(J/ψΩ-, J/ψΞ-), with (Ωc0,Ξc0)→ pK-K-π+, (Ω-,Ξ-)→(Λ0 K-,Λ0π-), Λ0→ pπ- and J/ψ→μ+μ-. The measured rτ values are averaged and combined with Run 1 (2011−2012) measurements in the same decay modes to obtain rτ = 1.109±0.055±0.010. Multiplying by the known Ξb- lifetime results in the Ωb- lifetime τΩb- = 1.751±0.089±0.022 ps, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. This measurement improves on the precision of the Ωb- lifetime by about a factor of two over the previous world average. The value of rτ is in agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions from the heavy quark expansion framework.
