Magnetic billiards:duality and magnetic Radon property

Abstract

We study Birkhoff magnetic billiards inside convex planar domains for a constant weak magnetic field. We prove that there exists a functional family of centrally-symmetric convex billiard tables satisfying the so-called magnetic Radon property. These are tables which have a rotational invariant curves consisting of $4$-periodic orbits with the rotation numbers either 1/4 or 3/4. These billiard tables can be constructed in a neighborhood of circles. However in our construction we do not use perturbation methods but rather some topological argument for the system of ODEs governing the magnetic Radon property. In contrast with this result we consider the magnetic billiard tables having discrete rotational symmetry for the angle 2π/k, k∈ℤ. We prove that in this case a rotational invariant curve consisting of k-periodic orbits exists, if and only if the billiard table is circular. We develop several tools, which, we believe, are important for other aspects of magnetic billiards. The first is the "magnetic duality" which enables to work with the dual object---the outer magnetic billiard. Secondly, we find the generating functions of outer magnetic billiard, both the ''standard" and the "non-standard" ones.
