A Cantilever-Based Method for Probing Adhesive Force and Detachment Energy in Cohesive Granular Materials

Abstract

Interparticle adhesion plays a critical role in the flow behavior of cohesive granular materials, yet quantitative characterization at the particle scale remains challenging. Here, we present a versatile cantilever-based method that combines a glass-beam cantilever for force measurements with a novel catapult mode for energy measurements, enabling the determination of both detachment force and detachment energy. Applied to three different cohesive materials: polymer-coated silica particles, wet granular media, and cross-linked poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) (PEHA) microparticles, this method reveals a fundamental decoupling between force and energy, suggesting that both quantities are equally critical for characterizing grain properties.
