Synthesis of ultrasmall Fe-based nanoparticles with tunable magnetic properties: the effect of NHC ligands
Abstract
-imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) ligand. The nature of the Fe organometallic precursors along with the presence of secondary ligands (palmitic acid and hexadecylamine) allowed the size of the nanoparticles and their magnetic properties to be adjusted. The nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, XRD, SAXS, WAXS, XPS, and VSM. The structural and surface studies led to the identification of a β-Mn type crystalline structure for all the Fe NPs, as well as the confirmation of the NHC coordination to the NP surface. Finally, magnetic measurements led to the determination of the NHC effect on the magnetic properties; the strong binding at the surface indeed reduces magnetization. This work establishes NHCs as robust ligands for stabilizing Fe-based nanoparticles, opening new avenues for the rational design of earth-abundant magnetic nanomaterials.
