Enhancement of the numerical solvers of the pyrolysis code Gpyro

Abstract

Gpyro is a reference code for pyrolysis modeling in fire science. This paper presents a comprehensive revision ofthe Gpyro numerical framework. The revision replaces legacy solvers with more stable and computationallyefficient algorithms, corrects critical numerical and physical-modeling issues, and restructures the codebase toimprove modularity and maintainability. These developments result in substantial performance gains, with thesimulations reported here running between 4 and 200 times faster than in the previous version, depending on theconfiguration and spatial resolution. Additionally, a comprehensive suite of verification and validation cases hasbeen developed, providing a robust foundation for assessing the accuracy and reliability of the simulations.
