Floquet Instability of Photon-Axion Conversion

Abstract

The discovery of axions would provide evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work, we investigate axion-photon conversion in the presence of a background magnetic field with simultaneous spatial and temporal periodicity. By performing a Lorentz transformation, the coupled axion-photon system is mapped onto a time-periodic linear system that can be analyzed using Floquet theorem. We find unstable modes associated with resonant crossing between Floquet replicas. The resulting complex Floquet exponents lead to exponentially growing modes, which we identify as a Floquet instability. Then, we determine the parameter regions in which this instability appears in a perturbative analysis. We further show that the Floquet instability enhances the axion-field amplitude generated from an initial photon field. Our results demonstrate that spatiotemporally periodic magnetic backgrounds provide a distinct mechanism for modifying axion-photon conversion through Floquet instability.
