Finite element modeling of transient hydrogen trapping in a network of randomly sized voids

Abstract

An adaptation of the hydrogen transport model is proposed to model the transient trapping of hydrogen in a network of randomly sized voids at pressures beyond the validity of perfect gas. To achieve this, the randomly sized voids are replaced by constant size voids, the radius of which being defined by the statistical properties of the size distribution, and with the same trapping kinetics. It is especially shown that this equivalent radius is not equal to a simple volumetric average of the void radius. This homogenization approach allows to determine the spatiotemporal evolution of the amount of hydrogen trapped in all the voids as a function of diffusive hydrogen conditions. This model is implemented in Abaqus using a user subroutine. It is validated on a configuration of the literature, in which the voids are explicitly modeled in finite elements, and a parametric study on the model parameters is conducted.
