A comprehensive review of mechanical testing of ice specimens and open database compiling published data

Abstract

This paper presents a review and an open database of experimental data on the mechanical behavior of ice. It compiles results of studies from the mid-20th century to the present day, documenting key parameters such as experimental setup, specimen geometry, temperature, stress or strain-rate, and loading mode. The analysis primarily addresses isotropic and anisotropic pure ice. The study highlights critical factors affecting the reproducibility of mechanical tests, including sample preparation, microstructural characterization (e.g., grain size, specimen dimensions), and control of environmental and loading conditions. Common sources of uncertainty are identified and best practices are outlined to improve consistency across studies. A harmonized data set is developed and organized into standardized tables that integrate information extracted from both text and published figures and tables. An interactive and user-friendly dashboard, named IceMechaData, is developed to facilitate data exploration, visualization, and export. Conceived as an open and continuously evolving resource, the platform also enables researchers to contribute newly generated or previously undigitized datasets through a standardized CSV template submitted to the corresponding author. This work provides a comprehensive benchmark to support the selection and validation of ice flow laws, while promoting data accessibility, reproducibility, and collaboration within the ice mechanics and glaciology communities.
