Rare Earth Elements Recovery with Membranes, Additive Manufacturing, and AI/ML Workflows

Abstract

Rare earth element (REE) extraction and separation from secondary sources are entering a critical stage as the demand for REE-enabled materials accelerates while conventional supply chains face technical, economic, and environmental pressure. Although significant progress has been made in REE separations from primary resources, inherent variability of secondary sources introduces substantial chemical and processing challenges, rendering REEs an ever-moving target for extraction and production. In this review, we discuss conventional and novel methods in separations, additive manufacturing–enabled separations, role of AI in separations, data driven approaches, AI/ML implementation, self-driving labs, and AI/ML workflows.
