Synthesis of multinary Ag(InxCe1− x)S2/ZnS quantum dots obtained by substitution of In by Ce in AgInS2/ZnS quantum dots: A cost-effective method for the production of highly photoluminescent and color tunable nanocrystals

Abstract

Highly photoluminescent dodecanethiol (DDT)-capped Ag(InxCe1−x)S2 quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by a partial substitution (up to 75 mol%) of In3+ by Ce3+ in AgInS2 QDs. The photoluminescence (PL) emission of QDs can be tuned from visible to near-infrared by varying the (Ce + In)/Ag molar ratio or the x value (1, 0.75, 0.5 or 0.25). After ZnS shell formation, Ag(InxCe1−x)S2/ZnS QDs exhibit a higher PL quantum yield (up to 72.4%) and an increased PL decay lifetime compared to AgInS2/ZnS QDs. Moreover, the incorporation of Ce3+ into AgInS2 nanocrystals allows for a marked reduction of the blueshift observed during the shell formation on AgInS2 QDs. The obtained Ag(InxCe1−x)S2/ZnS QDs exhibit an average size of ca. 2–3 nm and a narrow size distribution. Using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) or the amphiphilic poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (PMAO) polymer, oil-soluble Ag(InxCe1−x)S2/ ZnS QDs could be effectively transferred into the aqueous phase while retaining their optical properties. This substitution of In3+ by Ce3+ not only allows improvement of the optical properties of the nanocrystals but also leads to a reduction in their cost, which should favor the industrial development of Ag(InxCe1−x)S2/ZnS QDs.
