H ⁺ irradiation of ordinary chondrites supporting observations of Torifune by Hayabusa2#

Abstract

Context. The Hayabusa2# mission has performed a flyby of the S-type asteroid Torifune, and thanks to the NIRS3 instrument, it has collected infrared spectra in the 3 μm region for the first time on such a small dry body.

Aims. We simulated solar wind proton implantation on S-type asteroids and tested whether a 2.7–3 μm band related to hydration, as seen on the Moon, can be formed on anhydrous asteroids.

Methods. We performed ion irradiations on pressed pellets of olivine and three ordinary chondrites with 20 keV H ⁺ using fluences up to 4 × 10 ¹⁷ ions cm ⁻² . Reflectance spectra were acquired in situ before and after irradiation in the near-infrared range (2 − 4 μm).

Results. Our results indicate that hydration due to solar wind ions can occur on S-type asteroids through the formation of OH bonds. The process is seen thanks to a band at 2.8 μm that should be detectable in remote sensing data.
