Discovery of new octadecanoids in γ-linolenic acid rich oils
Abstract
17 novel hydroxy fatty acids derived from LA, ALA, and GLA were characterized in evening 2 primrose, borage and hemp oil. Structural characterization was based on semi-synthetic 3 standards generated by autoxidation, photoxidation and enzymatic conversions, combined 4 with LC-MS and GC-MS analysis with multiple derivatization strategies. Novel oxylipins 6-5 HODE and 7-HODE, presumably formed as site-products of Δ6-desaturase, showed 6 characteristic patterns in GLA-rich oils: 6-HODE occurred at high levels in in evening primrose 7 oil (23 ± 1 mg/100 g) and in borage oil (84 ± 7 mg/100 g), whereas 7-HODE (28.7 ± 8 0.6 mg/100 g) was abundant in hemp oil. These novel oxylipins occurred in similar 9 concentrations in both cold-pressed and refined oils and did not relate to the oxidation status. 10 Although, the occurrence of autoxidatively formed hydroxy-LA, ALA and GLA correlated with 11 peroxide value. Overall, these findings highlight novel oxylipins as promising markers of oil 12 quality and authenticity. 13 14 15 16
