Novel Mixed Approximate Deconvolution Large-Eddy Simulation Models for Two-Phase Flows

Abstract

Approximate Deconvolution (AD) frameworks for Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) offer a promising approach for modeling multiscale interactions in turbulent multiphase flows. However, some conventional formulations exhibit structural inconsistencies, identified in our previous work [Amani E., Molaei M.B., Ghorbani M. 2024 Novel mixed approximate deconvolution subgrid-scale models for large-eddy simulation. Physics of Fluids 36] which can impact the accuracy and robustness of AD-LES. To address this issue, the present study extends a family of structurally consistent AD closures to turbulent two-phase flows. Specifically, we introduce the Alternative Local Dynamic Model with Kinetic energy equation (A-LDMK), an improved non-equilibrium one-equation mixed eddy-viscosity AD framework. These closures are evaluated through a posteriori analyses of a single-phase turbulent channel flow and a turbulent two-phase gas-liquid mixing layer. The results indicate that the consistent frameworks enhance numerical stability and can sustain energy backscatter under less restrictive stability constraints compared to standard dynamic procedures. Specifically, the proposed A-LDMK provides the most accurate prediction of the multiscale primary atomization cascade in terms of droplet size distribution, compared to the other assessed closures.
