Subthreshold Resonances in the Scattering of μ^-Mesons by Atomic Nuclei
Abstract
A theoretical study of pre-threshold resonant excitation of atomic nuclei is presented. A formalism for utilizing leptonic probes in the energy region of a Feshbach-Baz pre-threshold resonance is proposed. The resonance positions and widths are shown to be intrinsically linked to the nuclear structure parameters. The correspondence of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) region for heavy nuclei to low probe energies, as well as its large resonance widths, is demonstrated. Through this framework, free from the intense background, the observable signatures of GDR excitation and de-excitation channels, including nuclear fission, are predicted
