Abstract

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals offer opportunities for solution-processable optoelectronic devices, although their functionality depends on electrical transport across interparticle junctions. Co3S4 has been explored largely for electrochemical applications. Here, we investigate optoelectronically active colloidal Co3S4 quantum dots (QDs) for lightresponsive electrical devices. Structural characterization confirms crystalline spinel Co3S4 nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 8.8 ± 3.1 nm. Optical absorption extends into the infrared region, with an estimated optical band gap of 0.35 eV. Films deposited onto Au interdigitated electrodes exhibit unstable current–voltage characteristics and no discernible photo response before post-deposition treatment. Following treatment with a butylamine–isopropanol mixture, the films show improved electrical reproducibility and a measurable photo response under broadband illumination, with rise and decay times of 15.8 and 31 s, respectively. These findings establish that structurally pure Co3S4 QDs grown through the colloidal route, could be used for optoelectronics.
