Abstract

Introduction: Vertigo and dizziness are typical medical problems that affect 20% to 30% of the general population, is more common in older people and affects women more frequently than males. Vestibular exercises are considered effective at reducing dizziness& increases quality of life and lessens the burden of fall-related injuries. Aim of the study: evaluate the effect of vestibular rehabilitation exercises on dizziness and quality of life among patient with vertigo. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the ENT outpatient Department, Alexandria Main University Hospital. Subjects: A purposive sample of 60 patients, diagnosed with dizziness or vertigo, and randomly assigned in two equal groups, 30 patients in each. Tools: Three tools used, Tool I: Patients' sociodemographic and clinical data questionnaire, Tool II: vertigo symptom scale–short form (VSS-sf), Tool III: vertigo patient's health related quality of life short form questionnaire. Results: the study group showed statistically significant, progressive improvement across all DHI domains (functional, physical, emotional, and total scores) and VSS subscales (vertigo and anxiety), after intervention, while the control group showed no significant change over time in any measure. Conclusions: Based on the findings of the present study, vestibular rehabilitation exercises had a statistically significant positive effect on reducing dizziness-related handicap and vertigo symptoms while improving health-related quality of life among patients with vertigo. Recommendations:Vestibular rehabilitation exercises should be incorporated as a routine component of nursing care protocols for patients with vertigo attending ENT and outpatient clinics.
