Abstract

The combined application of ionic liquids and high-pressure carbon dioxide to chemical synthesis is investigated. The outcomes of exemplar Diels-Alder and diene dimerization reaction are shown to be modified by changes in the reaction mixture, with reaction rate enhancement demonstrated in model systems. The utility of the carbon dioxide and ionic liquid mixture as an extraction medium was also investigated. The hybrid technology presented in this work has the potential to harness the advantages of using ionic liquids for chemical reactions, whilst addressing one of the limiting aspects of operation in ionic liquids on large scale: efficient separation of reactants and products form the reaction mixture.
