Laparoscopic Transabdominal Preperitoneal Repair for a Recurrent Inguinal Hernia After Direct Kugel Procedure: A Case Report

  1. 1Department of Surgery, Ibaraki Prefectural Central Hospital, Ibaraki, JPN

Abstract

Recurrent inguinal hernia (IH) repair is difficult and challenging because of the anatomical complexity and alterations involved. Recurrence is a multifactorial outcome influenced by both surgical and anatomical factors. Adopting a meticulous approach is important to avoid complications and recurrence. There is no consensus regarding the optimal approach for repairing recurrence. A laparoscopic approach is often preferred, as it provides clear visualization and facilitates identification. This report describes the case of a 78-year-old male patient, treated with direct Kugel (DK) hernioplasty three years earlier, who underwent laparoscopic surgery for recurrence. Completely covering the myopectineal orifice (MPO) with adequate overlap was essential to preventing recurrence. Laparoscopic surgery offers a beneficial approach for such cases.
