Abstract

Macrophage plasticity of function enables the control of inflammation and its resolution. This plasticity is calibrated by the coordination of cellular signaling with intracellular metabolism. Peroxisomes are regulators of lipid metabolism, and emerging discoveries implicate these organelles in both the control of inflammation and macrophage polarization. Herein, we summarize the immunomodulatory functions of macrophage peroxisomes, with a particular focus on the integration of lipid metabolism. Highlighted are the diverse fates of inflammation due to peroxisomal activity and peroxisomal targeting as an emerging concept for regulation of inflammation and inflammatory disorders.
