A multiscale lattice Boltzmann solver for free fluid/porous medium interaction in heterogeneous domains

Abstract

A new multiscale solver based on a lattice Boltzmann scheme for the unified simulation of free fluid/porous medium interactions is presented. Many test cases are provided, demonstrating that the proposed scheme correctly handles the modeling of highly heterogeneous media. Furthermore, it overcomes the restrictions of existing mesoscopic one-domain approaches in the literature, while avoiding the technical complexity of two-domain approaches that require coupling schemes constructed separately for the free fluid and porous medium parts. The framework’s robustness is illustrated in heterogeneous media and at free/porous interfaces: the scheme’s natural stability is validated, and it is observed that discontinuities in the relaxation times do not degrade the numerical performance, a point that is often problematic with more classical approaches. For example, we leverage this scheme to illustrate the caution required when applying interface laws such as the Beavers and Joseph condition. All the results support the use of the scheme on realistic cases, beyond idealized geometries. The solver provided to the community includes an automated parameterization module, allowing for direct use based on fluid viscosity and density, as well as the porosity and permeability of the studied domains.
