An isolated introduction of the brush-clawed shore crab Hemigrapus takanoi Asakura & Watanabe, 2005 in Western Brittany (France)

Abstract

We report a new French record of the introduced Varunid crab, Hemigrapsus takanoi Asakura & Watanabe, 2005, marking the first occurrence in Western Brittany, France.Specimens-including juveniles, ovigerous and non-ovigerous females, and males-conform to the species' descriptions. This population is approximately isolated by 250 km from the nearest known population, as confirmed by additional surveys along the Brittany coast.Collection stations were distant from ports but always near oyster farms, suggesting accidental introduction via oyster farming. This species known for its invasiveness has to be closely monitored in the forthcoming years as it could alter the functioning of native ecosystems and threaten local biodiversity.
