Abstract
Reducing oxidant consumption and avoiding toxic byproducts are critical challenges in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. This study presents an oxygen vacancy (Ov)-rich MnFe2O4 spinel on carbon cloth (MFOCC-Ov) enabling a direct oxidative transfer process (DOTP) for pollutant removal. Unlike conventional radical pathways, DOTP removes phenol via surface-induced polymerization, avoiding toxic by-products. Controlled Ov introduction (enhancing efficiency similarly in Mn3O4/α-FeOOH) optimizes electron structure (delocalization, narrowed bandgap, upshifted d-band center) via DFT, promoting a non-radical two-electron transfer between PMS and phenol. MD simulations confirm Ov facilitates PMS/phenol co-adsorption. The optimized MFOCC800 achieves exceptional phenol removal (nearly 100%) and TOC elimination (85.01%) with minimal PMS (PMS:PhOH=5:1). It demonstrates robust performance: >97% removal in real waters sustained operation (69.7% COD removal over 240 h continuous flow), excellent recyclability (>95% activity retention), selectivity, and efficacy in dynamic filtration for trace pollutants. This work provides a practical, oxidant-minimized DOTP strategy for sustainable water purification.
