Mechanical characterisation of Dendrocalamus asper bamboo and examination of idealised bamboo glulam joints in sustainable materials

Abstract

In this study, mechanical tests are performed on three-year-old Dendrocalamus asper , while the research focuses on conducting an exploratory finite-element study of five idealized bamboo-glulam joints. Compression samples (n = 15) were examined using an adjusted protocol referenced to withdrawn ISO 22157–1:2004; the archived H/D ≈ 2 geometry, deliberate node inclusion, and missing moisture/density records are not equivalent to ISO 22157:2019. Meanwhile, ASTM D3039-type tabbed dog-bone coupons (n = 5) were employed to measure longitudinal tension for practical gripping. However, that composite-material method does not equal the bamboo-specific ISO process. The findings highlighted mean nominal compression and tension strengths of 56.99 and 77.88 MPa, respectively, while the bottom-node group exhibited the highest descriptive compression mean (66.54 MPa). Nonetheless, these findings and not characteristic design values and are not condition-specific. The FE models employ literature-based orthotropy, homogeneous node-free materials, bonded contacts and assumed friction without matched glulam/joint examinations. Meanwhile, model-specific global mesh-sensitivity reruns resulted in adjacent mesh differences of less than 5% in maximum total deformation and equivalent stress at the finest refinement step. Nonetheless, local interface stresses and failure modes have not yet been validated. Thus, numerical contours identify probable hotspots and priorities for future validation.
