Modelling Emotional Dynamics in the Life of Amrita Pritam: A Nonlinear Perspective on Longing and Companionship
Abstract
Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) was a prominent writer of modern Indian literature, particularly in Punjabi and Hindi. Her literary-biographical context provides a setting for exploring memory, longing, companionship, and emotional regulation through simple dynamical models. This study develops three single-state ordinary differential equation models centred on two important relational references in her life: Sahir Ludhianvi, associated with memory, absence, recollection, and longing, and Imroz, associated with companionship, care, continuity, and support. The first model describes Sahir-related longing through memory-driven excitation and natural emotional decay (fading); the second models Imroz-related companionship through nonlinear stabilisation around a preferred emotional state; and the third unifies both influences within a single-state framework. Analytical solutions, equilibrium conditions, local stability analysis, and numerical simulations are used to examine emotional-state decay and persistence, convergence to stable equilibria, and threshold effects on system behaviour. The results indicate that memory-related reinforcement may sustain the modelled emotional state under suitable stimulus conditions, whereas Imroz-related companionship may drive the system towards a stable upper equilibrium when initial conditions lie within the admissible range. The unified model illustrates how memory-driven longing and companionship-driven stabilisation associated with Sahir and Imroz can jointly shape a modelled emotional trajectory. This study is conceptual and mathematical, not empirical or psychological. It neither measures private emotions of Amrita Pritam nor estimates parameters from biographical data. Instead, it introduces a simple nonlinear framework for exploring memory, fading, companionship, equilibrium, and threshold effects in a literary-biographical context.
